Recently, the Granite State Amateur Radio Association had the pleasure of visiting the LDS Youth Group in Peterborough, NH, for a lively and engaging demonstration of ham radio. Kim (KC1VYM), Tim (KC1QDK), Eric (N1JUR), and Ralph (KC1TLY) spent the day sharing their passion for radio technology with over 20 enthusiastic teens and parents—what a fantastic experience!

From the moment we arrived, the energy was contagious. We kicked things off by explaining how radio signals travel and how ham radio operators communicate across local and global distances. The teens were especially curious about how to get their licenses, and we walked them through the steps to become licensed amateurs, making the process seem accessible and exciting.

One of the highlights was introducing the concepts of Parks on the Air (POTA) and Summits on the Air (SOTA)—amazing activities that combine outdoor adventure with radio operation. Several parents and teens eagerly picked up 2-meter handheld transceivers (HTs), ready to try their hand at local communication. We even coordinated with other local hams on repeaters, allowing the teens to experience the thrill of making contact with operators from nearby communities.

A particularly fun part of the day was teaching some of the teens Morse code—many of them learned to spell their names in Morse, which was a hit! We also demonstrated HF (high frequency) radio, giving everyone a taste of long-distance communication, and showing how ham radio can connect people across continents.

Overall, it was a rewarding day filled with curiosity, learning, and new connections. We’re grateful to the LDS Youth Group for welcoming us and giving us the opportunity to share our passion for ham radio. We hope some of these young folks will be inspired to pursue their licenses and explore the exciting world of amateur radio!
