What is Amateur Radio Emergency Service [ARES]

Every licensed amateur radio operator regardless of license class is invited to apply for membership in the New Hampshire Amateur Radio Emergency Service (NH-ARES) regardless of affiliation with organizations such as ARRL, CERT or any other local or national group.

How can I get involved?

Becoming an active member of NH-ARES opens doors to engage in training opportunities that can enhance your ability to contribute effectively during emergencies and public service events. Public service events serve as a unique training platform in tactical communications. Information on local ARES groups in our area can be found below.

As a vital component of the State of New Hampshire emergency response framework, as well as other served agencies, having the knowledge of how to use emergency equipment—capable of operating during communications outages has its advantages and can enhance your operational capabilities in times of a disaster. Possessing emergency equipment it is not a prerequisite for membership. .

  • Greater Manchester Group

Greater Manchester ARES avails communications support to local organizations for public events, as well as to area emergency service agencies in the event existing infrastructure becomes inadequate or impaired.  We maintain active partnerships with Catholic Medical Center, The Elliot Hospital, the Auburn and Manchester Emergency Operations Centers, as well as the Manchester Health Department which oversees public health activities for the region.  The GM-ARES team regularly plans for and practices the skills necessary to perform professionally when called upon through on-air and classroom training as well as during field exercises conducted throughout the year.  I welcome you to check us out and consider joining our dedicated group.

  • Greater Nashua Group

Greater Nashua ARES is one of ten geographical groups that offer reliable backup emergency and public service communication support throughout the state of New Hampshire. This group is primarily responsible for providing backup emergency communications to its assigned 22 communities, which include the more populated municipalities of Nashua, Amherst, Milford, Merrimack, Hollis, and Wilton.

The Greater Nashua ARES Group meets monthly to provide training in both analog and digital communication modes. Additionally, they conduct weekly operational nets that enhance the skills of their operators in delivering situational awareness reports to local and state emergency management organizations, as well as to the National Weather Service's (NWS) SKYWARN program.
