KB1ICL - John Bock Park Intel
June 28, 2023 - TF-0004 - Skaftafell National Park - In the background covered in clouds is the Vatnajokull glacier, Europe’s largest glacier. I was the first to successfully active this reference. As of February 6th I remain the only person to activate this reference.
June 25, 2023 - TF-0012 - Snæfellsjökull National Park - In front of the van is the ice capped Snæfellsjökull volcano, which last erupted less than 1800 years ago. Although we had a internet hot spot there was no service at this location and I did not think to spot myself at lower elevation were we did have cell service. None the less I did make 3 contacts unfortunately they were not familiar with POTA and could not spot me. I was the first person to attempt to activate this reference and as of 02/06/2024 still remain as the only person to attempt.
As of 02/06/2024 Iceland has 16 references included in Parks On the Air, many have not even been attempted.
I have been to Iceland once in February and once in June. Surprisingly, they have relatively mild temperatures as the country is in the jet stream from the south. But they do have very high winds. I highly recommend visiting this beautiful country for it’s unique and diverse landscape and very friendly people. Be sure to get a hot dog with everything and an orange soda, you’ll go back for another guaranteed.
